Fraser Island Camping

Do you fancy getting back to nature, with just canvas between you and the beautiful scenery that is Fraser Island, Australia?

Camping on Fraser Island is peaceful, quiet and often you are the only soul around. You can find formal fenced camp sites in Lake Boomanjin, Central Station, Dundubara, Waddy Point (Top) which are the best sites if you have kids with you.

For more informal options - Fraser Island has a number of 'camping zones' nestled in behind the sand dunes on the eastern beach, as well as hidden in wilderness areas of the western beach. You will need to pick up a map of Fraser Island to identify the places you can pitch your tent.

While there are a few scattered communities on the island, Fraser Island is no tourism hot spot. You will need to bring your drinking water and containers and remember that open fires are generally not permitted on the island, so a fuel stove for cooking is essential. If you plan on using the showers at one of the formal campsites, make sure you bring some coins with you as they are coin operated.

Travel around Fraser Island is strictly by 4WD, with caravans and trailers not recommended. All of the regular road rules apply, with speed limits of 80km per hour along Seventy Five Mile Beach and 35km per hour on all inland tracks and roads.

To camp and drive on Fraser Island you first need to pick up a permit. Queensland Parks and Wildlife put together permit packs with a camping permit, 4WD permit and a map of the island to help make your stay memorable.
