Fraser Island Getaway | Queensland
unspoilt beauty - unique scenery
Tourism on Fraser Island is all about nature and scenery. You can easily find tours lasting half a day, a full day, or up to a week, if you fall in love with one of the most beautiful of Australia's islands.
Most Fraser Island tours will visit Lake McKenzie, an inland lake of azure blue surrounded by dazzling white powder soft sand. They will also take in the Pinnacles - towering cliffs of coloured sand, the wreck of the cruise ship the Maheno and some of the most amazing rainforests - the only place in the world where towering rainforests can be found growing on sand.
Tours generally are by 4WD car or specialised 4WD coach as Fraser Island travel is 4WD territory. You can also pick up walking tours along the Great Fraser Island walk as an alternative.
One of the best ways to see the island is in a small chartered plane, dipping low over the lakes and scanning the size of the sand blows. It is a breathtaking experience that will always be remembered. Flights can be organised leaving from Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast or Hervey Bay airports.
The sea surrounding Fraser Island, Australia has attractions all of its own. Humpback whales and their calves come in very close to the island during their annual migration, so whale watching tours are popular. At other times of the year, dugong, turtle and wild dolphin tours in the Great Sandy Strait are available.
Tours leave from Rainbow Beach, Urangan Boat Harbour in Hervey Bay as well as from all the major Brisbane hotels and transit centres.
