Getting to Fraser island

Travel to Fraser Island and you will feel like you have been transported to another world; a world where nature and unspoilt wilderness holds sway and everyday life takes a back seat.

Tourism on Fraser Island is not city lights, discos and theme parks. It is the quiet sunset, the world's best beach fishing, ancient rainforests and mile high sand blows. It is humpback whales and their calves playing during their annual migration and dugongs and turtles grazing on sea grass.

Drive 3½ hours north of Brisbane to Rainbow Beach and meet your vehicle barge at Inskip Point. Collect your 4WD permit and map of Fraser Island and head off on your adventure.

Flying to Fraser Island, Australia is via plane from Brisbane, Maroochydore Airport on the Sunshine Coast or Hervey Bay Airport with bus connection to the Urangan Boat Harbour in Hervey Bay.

Once at the boat harbour meet your tour guides and look forward to discovering the World Heritage listed Fraser Island. Boats from Hervey Bay to Fraser Island take about ½ hour as they float gently through the Great Sandy Strait. Another option is one of the regular whale watching cruises leaving Hervey Bay for the ocean around Fraser Island during August - October.

There is an amazing choice of tour buses, coaches and 4WD ecotours available. Coaches and tours leave regularly from Brisbane from major hotels, the airport and Brisbane Transit Centre.

Once you are on Fraser Island, transport is by 4WD vehicle, walking, canoeing, mountain bikes, small plane and boat.
